Breakaway Torque

It's different from the continuous torque rating, which is what the tool sustains while running. An impact wrench with 250 ft-lbs of continuous torque might deliver 350 ft-lbs of breakaway torque. That burst is what matters for rusted bolts and over-tightened lug nuts. Once the fastener breaks free, the continuous torque spins it out. Some tools list both specs, some only list the higher breakaway number.
Why It Matters
If a bolt is seized or corroded, continuous torque won't move it. The breakaway burst is what pops it loose. When comparing impact wrenches, check whether the headline number is breakaway or continuous. They're often 30 to 50% apart.
