The platform has been backward-compatible since its lithium-ion launch in 2013, and even the original NiCad ONE+ batteries from 2004 physically fit modern tools (though lithium-ion batteries outperform them significantly). Battery Compatibility
Every Ryobi ONE+ battery (including old NiCad packs) physically fits every ONE+ tool. HP batteries provide extra performance only in HP brushless tools but still work normally in standard tools. The 40V HP platform (yard tools) is a separate system. ONE+ batteries do not fit 40V tools.
Price Positioning
Budget. The cheapest major cordless platform. Bare tools run $30-$150 for most categories. Ryobi offsets lower margins with volume and Home Depot exclusivity. Is Ryobi good enough for real projects?
For home projects and occasional renovation, yes. The HP brushless tools are genuinely capable and will drill, cut, and sand anything a homeowner encounters. Where Ryobi falls behind is sustained professional use: 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The clutches wear faster, the chucks develop wobble sooner, and the batteries degrade quicker under constant heavy loads. If you build things on weekends, Ryobi handles it fine.
What does ONE+ HP mean?
HP stands for High Performance. HP tools use brushless motors and benefit from HP batteries that deliver higher discharge rates. Standard ONE+ tools use brushed motors and do not see any performance increase from HP batteries (though they still run normally). If you are buying new Ryobi tools, get the HP versions. The price difference is usually $10-$20.
Can I use Ryobi 40V batteries in ONE+ 18V tools?
No. Ryobi 40V HP is a separate platform sold for outdoor power equipment (full-size mowers, blowers, chainsaws). The batteries are physically larger and use different connections. Some Ryobi outdoor tools come in both ONE+ (18V) and 40V versions. If you already own ONE+ tools, get the 18V outdoor versions to share batteries.
