Milwaukee M18 is the professional contractor platform, with over 250 tools built around an 18V battery that has been backward-compatible since 2008. The FUEL sub-line uses brushless motors and REDLINK intelligence for the highest-performance tools in the system. Milwaukee has pushed harder than any competitor into specialty trades: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and concrete all have dedicated M18 tools that do not exist on other platforms. That trade focus is why M18 dominates commercial jobsites.
Battery Lineup
Every battery below fits every M18 tool. Pick batteries based on how you use your tools, not which tools you own.
| Battery | Capacity | Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| M18 REDLITHIUM CP2.0 | 2.0 Ah | 0.75 lb | Impact drivers and fastening tools where compact size and balance matter |
| M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 | 5.0 Ah | 1.50 lb | General-purpose. Good balance of runtime and weight for saws and drills |
| M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC6.0 | 6.0 Ah | 1.62 lb | Grinders, rotary hammers, and high-draw tools that benefit from the higher discharge rate |
| M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 | 12.0 Ah | 2.98 lb | All-day runtime on table saws, miter saws, and concrete tools where you cannot stop to recharge |
Drills and Drivers
Brushless, 1,400 in-lbs torque, 4-speed. The benchmark professional hammer drill.
Brushless, 2,000 in-lbs, 4-speed. Fastest drive speed in the 18V class.
Shorter body than the 2904. 850 in-lbs of torque in a package that fits in floor joists.
Depth-sensitive nose, 4,500 RPM, built for drywall contractors.
Saws
7-1/4" blade, brushless, 5,800 RPM. Cuts faster than most corded saws.
1-1/4" stroke length, orbital action. The demolition standard.
Barrel grip, brushless, 5 orbital settings. Less vibration than competitors.
10" dual-bevel sliding, brushless. Cuts 4x6 lumber. Needs 8.0 Ah or larger battery.
Plumbing and HVAC
Expands 3/8" to 1-1/2" PEX-A tubing. No other cordless platform has this.
Presses copper, steel, and stainless fittings. Replaces soldering on commercial jobs.
Threads 1/2" to 2" pipe. Battery powered threading was impossible five years ago.
Concrete and Masonry
1-1/8" capacity, 2 ft-lbs impact energy. Drills anchor holes in concrete.
1-3/4" capacity. Handles core drilling and light chipping in reinforced concrete.
8-foot flex shaft. Consolidates poured concrete without a generator.
Best Starter Kit
3697-22 M18 FUEL Hammer Drill and Impact Driver Kit
The standard entry point for professionals. Both tools are the FUEL (brushless) versions with the best batteries Milwaukee makes at this price. If you do not need the hammer function, the 3601-20 compact drill kit saves $50 but uses smaller batteries.
Best Expansions After the Starter Kit
Once you own the drill and impact driver, these are the next tools that earn their keep.
After a drill and impact, the circular saw is the third tool professionals buy. The M18 version keeps up with corded models.
Cuts drywall, removes grout, sands in corners. The universal problem-solver for remodeling.
Demolition and rough framing. Nothing tears out old work faster.
4-1/2" / 5" with brake and paddle switch. Grinds welds, cuts tile, and strips paint.
Battery Compatibility
Every M18 battery fits every M18 tool, going back to the original 2008 tools. HIGH OUTPUT batteries work in older tools (they just provide longer runtime, not higher performance). M12 batteries are a different platform and do not fit M18 tools. The MX FUEL line (construction equipment) is a third separate platform.
Price Positioning
Premium. Bare tools run $100-$250 for common categories, with specialty trade tools reaching $1,000+. Milwaukee costs 15-25% more than DeWalt for comparable tools. The premium buys better brushless motors, REDLINK electronics, and trade-specific features no other brand offers.
Before You Buy Into a Platform
Picking a battery platform is a commitment. Every new tool you buy locks you in deeper. Before you spend $300 on a starter kit, borrow a friend's tools and try the platform. The grip, the weight, the battery swap mechanism, the trigger feel: these things matter and you cannot judge them from spec sheets.

What is the difference between M18 and M18 FUEL?
M18 FUEL tools use brushless motors and REDLINK PLUS intelligence. Standard M18 tools use brushed motors. FUEL tools last longer, run cooler, and produce more power from the same battery. The batteries are identical across both. If you are buying one tool, get the FUEL version. If you are filling out a kit and budget matters, standard M18 handles lighter tasks fine.
Are Milwaukee HIGH OUTPUT batteries worth the extra cost?
For high-draw tools like grinders, rotary hammers, and the miter saw, yes. HIGH OUTPUT batteries deliver current faster, which translates to more power under load. For drills and drivers, you will not notice the difference. A standard XC5.0 works great for most fastening and drilling.
Can I use M12 batteries in M18 tools?
No. M12 and M18 are separate platforms with different battery connections. Milwaukee makes a few tools (like the 2420-20 HACKZALL) in both M12 and M18 versions, but the batteries do not interchange. If you use M12 tools alongside M18, you need both charger types.
