Milwaukee M12 is the compact cordless platform built for one-handed use, overhead work, and tight spaces where full-size 18V tools cannot fit. The lineup has grown past 100 tools, covering everything from installation drills to soldering irons to heated jackets. M12 is not a stripped-down version of M18. Many M12 tools have no M18 equivalent because the whole point is a smaller, lighter form factor. Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians often carry both M12 and M18 tools, using each where its size makes sense.
Battery Lineup
Every battery below fits every M12 tool. Pick batteries based on how you use your tools, not which tools you own.
| Battery | Capacity | Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| M12 REDLITHIUM CP1.5 | 1.5 Ah | 0.40 lb | Inspection cameras, heated gear, and tools where you need the smallest possible pack |
| M12 REDLITHIUM CP2.5 | 2.5 Ah | 0.56 lb | Everyday compact tools. Good default battery for the installation drill and impact driver |
| M12 REDLITHIUM XC4.0 | 4.0 Ah | 0.74 lb | Extended runtime for ratchets, cutters, and any tool you run continuously |
| M12 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5.0 | 5.0 Ah | 0.84 lb | The reciprocating saw and bandsaw. Highest capacity in the M12 line. |
Drills and Drivers
4-in-1 with offset, right angle, and hex attachments. Fits in a 2x4 stud bay.
1,700 in-lbs, 3-speed. Surprisingly powerful for its size.
Compact hammer drill for light masonry and general drilling in tight spots.
Cutting
One-handed reciprocating saw. Cuts pipe, strut, and drywall in walls.
Cuts 1-5/8" round and 1-5/8" x 1-5/8" square stock. Cleaner cuts than a reciprocating saw.
Flush cuts, sanding, scraping. Variable speed, tool-free accessory change.
Fastening and Ratchets
55 ft-lbs. Fits between engine components and in junction boxes.
40 ft-lbs. For smaller fasteners and instrument screws.
250 ft-lbs. Removes lug nuts and suspension bolts in automotive work.
Specialty and Inspection
9 mm camera head, 3-foot cable. Looks inside walls and behind panels.
Cordless soldering iron with 90-second heat-up. Electronics and wire work.
160x120 resolution. Finds heat leaks, hot circuits, and plumbing leaks.
Best Starter Kit
2598-22 M12 FUEL Drill and Impact Driver Kit
Covers drilling and fastening in one box at $150 less than the M18 equivalent kit. The compact size is the draw. If you work in finished spaces, crawlspaces, or overhead, these tools earn their keep by fitting where M18 tools do not.
Best Expansions After the Starter Kit
Once you own the drill and impact driver, these are the next tools that earn their keep.
One-handed cutting in walls and ceilings. Cuts PVC, copper, wood, and drywall anchors.
Fits in spaces where a standard ratchet handle cannot swing. HVAC and automotive staple.
Flush cuts, detail sanding, and scraping old adhesive. The compact body gets into tight spots.
Battery Compatibility
All M12 batteries fit all M12 tools. M12 and M18 are separate platforms with different battery connections. You cannot put an M12 battery in an M18 tool or vice versa. Milwaukee sells M12/M18 combo chargers (48-59-1812) so you can charge both from one station.
Price Positioning
Mid-to-premium. Bare tools run $60-$200. Cheaper than M18 equivalents when both exist, but many M12 tools are specialty items with no direct M18 competitor. The 12V platform is unique among major brands for how deep the specialty lineup goes.
Before You Buy Into a Platform
Picking a battery platform is a commitment. Every new tool you buy locks you in deeper. Before you spend $300 on a starter kit, borrow a friend's tools and try the platform. The grip, the weight, the battery swap mechanism, the trigger feel: these things matter and you cannot judge them from spec sheets.

Should I buy M12 or M18?
Depends on what you are building. M18 is the primary platform for framing, remodeling, and heavy-duty work. M12 is for installation, service calls, and precision work in finished spaces. Many professionals own both. If you only buy one platform and do general home projects, get M18. If you work in electrical panels, HVAC units, or automotive engine bays, M12 fits where M18 cannot.
Is M12 powerful enough for home projects?
For drilling holes and driving screws, yes. The M12 FUEL impact driver puts out 1,700 in-lbs, which is enough to drive 3" deck screws and lag bolts. Where M12 falls short is sustained cutting. You can use the HACKZALL for occasional cuts, but a circular saw or miter saw needs M18 or bigger.
Can I use M12 HIGH OUTPUT batteries in older M12 tools?
Yes. HIGH OUTPUT batteries are backward compatible with every M12 tool Milwaukee has made. Older tools will not pull the higher discharge rate, but they get longer runtime from the bigger capacity. No firmware update needed.
