DeWalt 20V MAX is the largest cordless tool platform in North America by tool count, with over 300 tools sharing the same battery. The platform launched in 2011 and has expanded from basic drills into concrete tools, outdoor power equipment, and jobsite lighting. Every 20V MAX battery fits every 20V MAX tool, and DeWalt has committed to keeping it that way. The FLEXVOLT 60V batteries also work in 20V MAX tools, so upgrading to higher-capacity batteries never orphans existing tools.

Battery Compatibility
All DeWalt 20V MAX batteries fit all 20V MAX tools. FLEXVOLT 60V batteries also work in 20V MAX tools at 20V. The 12V MAX line uses different batteries and is not cross-compatible. Chargers are shared between 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT.
Price Positioning
Mid-range. Bare tools run $80-$200 for most categories. Cheaper than Milwaukee in matched comparisons but more expensive than Ryobi. DeWalt runs aggressive bundle pricing at Home Depot that drops the per-tool cost if you buy kits.

Are DeWalt 20V MAX and 20V MAX XR the same battery platform?
Yes. XR means the tool has a brushless motor, not that it uses different batteries. A $50 compact battery works in an XR tool the same way it works in a standard one. The battery platform is 20V MAX across the board.
Do FLEXVOLT 60V batteries work in 20V MAX tools?
They do. FLEXVOLT batteries automatically switch between 20V and 60V depending on the tool. In a 20V MAX drill, a FLEXVOLT 6.0 Ah battery acts as a 20V 6.0 Ah pack. The reverse is not true. You cannot use 20V MAX batteries in 60V FLEXVOLT tools.
Is DeWalt 20V MAX actually 20 volts?
The nominal voltage is 18V, measured under load. DeWalt markets the peak voltage (20V), which is measured at full charge with no load. Milwaukee and Makita market their equivalent platforms as 18V. The actual power output is comparable across all three brands.
