Bosch 18V is a smaller platform than DeWalt or Milwaukee by tool count (around 70 tools), but the tools it does make tend to score high on precision, vibration control, and dust management. Bosch manufactures tools in both Germany and Malaysia, and the engineering emphasis shows in features like the KickBack Control accelerometer and connected-ready Bluetooth modules. The PROFACTOR sub-line adds higher performance from BITURBO brushless motors that pull more current from CORE18V batteries. Bosch does not try to match the catalog breadth of DeWalt or Milwaukee. Instead, it focuses on the core trades: woodworking, concrete, and electrical.
Battery Lineup
Every battery below fits every 18V tool. Pick batteries based on how you use your tools, not which tools you own.
| Battery | Capacity | Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| GBA18V40 Compact | 4.0 Ah | 1.25 lb | Standard drills, drivers, and light tools. Good balance of runtime and portability |
| GBA18V63 CORE18V | 6.3 Ah | 1.56 lb | Saws, grinders, and PROFACTOR tools that need higher sustained current |
| GBA18V80 CORE18V | 8.0 Ah | 1.70 lb | The rotary hammer and table saw. Maximum runtime for demanding concrete and framing work |
| GBA18V120 CORE18V | 12.0 Ah | 2.65 lb | All-day jobs where you cannot stop to swap batteries. Heavy but lasts through long cuts |
Drills and Drivers
PROFACTOR, 1,330 in-lbs, KickBack Control. Stops the drill if it binds on rebar.
PROFACTOR, 1,860 in-lbs, 4-speed. Connected-ready module bay for Bluetooth tracking.
Compact brushless, 400 in-lbs. Comes with a 2.0 Ah battery and charger.
Saws
7-1/4", BITURBO motor, 5,600 RPM. Connects to Bosch dust extraction wirelessly.
1-1/4" stroke, variable speed. Lighter than Milwaukee SAWZALL at similar performance.
Plunge-cut track saw with anti-kickback. Precision panel cutting without a table saw.
Concrete and Masonry
1-1/8" capacity, 2.4 ft-lbs. Vibration Control side handle reduces shock.
1-3/4" capacity. Competes with corded rotary hammers on energy per blow.
Drives 1/2" to 2-1/2" pins into concrete without gas cartridges.
Woodworking
5" pad, variable speed, integrated dust box. Low-vibration design for extended sanding.
Variable speed, plunge base available. Precision edge routing and template work.
3-1/4" width, dual-mount knives. Brushless motor maintains RPM under load.
Best Starter Kit
GXL18V-227B25 18V PROFACTOR Hammer Drill and Impact Driver Kit
Both tools include KickBack Control and connected-ready module bays, features nobody else offers at this price. The CORE18V batteries outperform standard lithium packs on sustained load. If you value build precision and vibration control over raw power, this kit is the right starting point.
Best Expansions After the Starter Kit
Once you own the drill and impact driver, these are the next tools that earn their keep.
Wireless dust extraction sync is unique to Bosch. The cut quality with the built-in riving knife is excellent.
Edge profiles, template routing, and roundovers without a cord. Variable speed handles different bit sizes.
If you drill into concrete or masonry, this is the tool. Vibration Control is noticeably better than competitors.
StarlockMax interface accepts the largest oscillating accessories. Cuts flush, sands corners, scrapes adhesive.
Battery Compatibility
All Bosch 18V batteries fit all Bosch 18V tools, including PROFACTOR tools. CORE18V batteries provide better performance in PROFACTOR tools because of higher discharge rates, but standard batteries still work. Bosch also makes a 12V platform (not cross-compatible) and the BITURBO 18V tools that specifically require CORE18V batteries for full performance.
Price Positioning
Mid-to-premium. Bare tools run $90-$250 for most categories. Comparable to Milwaukee on price but with fewer promotions. Bosch sells through Home Depot, Lowe's, and independent dealers, which means less aggressive bundle pricing than Home Depot-exclusive brands. The value shows up in vibration control, dust management, and build precision rather than raw specs.
Before You Buy Into a Platform
Picking a battery platform is a commitment. Every new tool you buy locks you in deeper. Before you spend $300 on a starter kit, borrow a friend's tools and try the platform. The grip, the weight, the battery swap mechanism, the trigger feel: these things matter and you cannot judge them from spec sheets.
See how FriendsWithTools worksCommon Questions
Is the Bosch 18V platform big enough to build a full kit?
For a woodworker, electrician, or concrete contractor, yes. The platform covers drills, saws, routers, rotary hammers, sanders, and nailers. What it lacks compared to DeWalt and Milwaukee is depth in outdoor power equipment, plumbing, and HVAC. If you need a cordless string trimmer or PEX expansion tool, Bosch does not make one on the 18V platform.
What is PROFACTOR?
PROFACTOR tools use BITURBO brushless motors that run at higher RPM and pull more current than standard brushless motors. They are Bosch's answer to Milwaukee FUEL and DeWalt XR. PROFACTOR tools work with any 18V battery but perform best with CORE18V packs. The name is confusing because it sounds like a separate platform, but it is not. Same batteries, same charger.
Does Bosch still make the 12V MAX tools?
Yes. Bosch 12V MAX is an active platform with around 30 tools. It fills the same niche as Milwaukee M12: compact tools for tight spaces and precision work. The 12V batteries are not compatible with 18V tools. Bosch 12V is less popular than M12 because the tool selection is smaller, but the individual tools (especially the impact driver and oscillating multi-tool) are well-regarded.
