Spring cleanup sets the tone for the rest of the growing season. The work breaks into four phases: clearing winter debris, trimming overgrowth, prepping the lawn, and preparing garden beds. Most of the tools are things you'll use repeatedly throughout the season.
Cost Breakdown
Clearing Debris
A leaf rake for debris, a bow rake for leveling soil. Both are season-long tools.
Faster than raking for large areas. A battery-powered model covers most suburban lots.
Hauls debris, mulch, and soil. If you have a yard, you'll use this all season.
Trimming
Hand pruners for branches up to 3/4" diameter. Buy a bypass style (not anvil) for clean cuts on live wood.
Long handles for branches 3/4" to 2" diameter. Ratcheting models reduce hand fatigue.
Only needed if you have formal hedges. Borrow if it's a once-a-year task.
Lawn Prep
First mow of the season at 3-3.5 inches. Bag the first cut to remove debris.
Edges along sidewalks, driveways, and fences. Battery trimmers handle most suburban lots.
For fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicide application. A one-time spring task.
Consumables and Supplies
These get used up during the project. Always buy these new.
- Lawn fertilizer Apply after first mow when soil temp hits 55°F
- Mulch 2-3 inch layer in garden beds. 1 cubic yard covers ~100 sq ft at 3 inches.
- Pre-emergent herbicide Apply before soil temperature reaches 55°F to prevent crabgrass
- Grass seed For bare patches. Match to your existing grass type.
Safety Gear
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses (trimming)
- Hearing protection (mower, trimmer, blower)
Before You Buy Anything
Check if your neighbors already have the tools you need. Borrowing saves money, saves storage space, and keeps tools in use instead of collecting dust.
See how FriendsWithTools worksCommon Questions
When should I start spring cleanup?
When the ground thaws and daytime temps consistently hit 50°F. Too early and you compact wet soil. Too late and weeds get established. In most of the US, that's mid-March to mid-April.
Battery mower vs gas mower?
Battery mowers handle yards up to 1/3 acre on a single charge and are quieter, lighter, and maintenance-free. Gas mowers have unlimited runtime and more power for thick or tall grass. For most suburban lots, battery is the better choice now.
