Stock closet organizer kits from home improvement stores work for standard closets, but they are overpriced for what they are: melamine boards and metal brackets. Building your own shelving with 3/4-inch plywood or melamine costs less and fits your closet exactly. The tools are basic and the cuts are all straight.

Measuring & Planning

Tape Measure

Measure the closet interior carefully. Closets are rarely square, so measure at multiple heights.

Level

Level lines on the walls for shelf bracket positions. Nothing falls off a level shelf.

Buy
Stud Finder

Find wall studs for bracket screws. Drywall anchors alone will not hold heavy shelf loads.

Cutting & Assembly

Circular Saw

Rip plywood or melamine shelves to width. A straightedge clamped to the sheet guides a straight cut.

Either
Drill Driver

Drives shelf bracket screws into studs and pilot holes in shelving material.

Clamps Optional

Hold the straightedge in place while cutting. Two spring clamps or C-clamps are enough.

Consumables and Supplies

These get used up during the project. Always buy these new.

  • 3/4-inch plywood or melamine One 4x8 sheet makes 4-5 shelves at 12-16 inches deep
  • Shelf brackets One bracket every 16-24 inches along the shelf. More brackets for heavy loads.
  • Wood screws (2.5-3 inch) For brackets into studs. Shorter screws for shelf-to-bracket attachment.
  • Edge banding Iron-on edge tape for plywood to cover the exposed grain on shelf fronts
  • Closet rod and brackets If adding a hanging section. Standard height is 66 inches for full-length, 42 inches for double-hang.

Safety Gear

  • Safety glasses (sawing)
  • Dust mask (cutting melamine creates fine dust)

Before You Buy Anything

Check if your neighbors already have the tools you need. Borrowing saves money, saves storage space, and keeps tools in use instead of collecting dust.

Common Questions

Plywood or melamine for closet shelves?

Melamine is pre-finished, wipes clean, and looks good without paint. It is heavier than plywood and chips easily when cut (use a fine-tooth blade). Plywood is lighter, stronger for the same thickness, and takes paint well but needs finishing. For closets, melamine is the more popular choice because it requires no painting.

How deep should closet shelves be?

Standard closet shelves are 12-16 inches deep. A 12-inch shelf fits folded clothes and shoe boxes. A 16-inch shelf fits bulkier items and storage bins. For a reach-in closet, do not go deeper than 16 inches or items in the back become hard to see and reach.
