Sanding Pad Size

Pad size is the diameter of the sanding disc the tool accepts. The standard is 5 inches (125 mm) for random-orbit sanders. Some models use 6-inch pads, which cover about 44% more area per pass but make the tool bigger and heavier. 5-inch discs are sold everywhere, cost less, and come in every grit. 6-inch discs are slightly harder to find at hardware stores but easy online. Detail sanders use triangular pads roughly 3.5 inches per side for corners and tight spots.

Why It Matters

A 6-inch pad covers more surface per pass, so large flat panels go faster. A 5-inch pad fits into tighter spaces and is lighter for overhead work. Most people buy 5-inch because the discs are cheaper and more available. Body shops and cabinet makers tend to prefer 6-inch.
