Quick-Change Chuck

A quick-change chuck lets you swap bits with one hand in about a second. On an impact driver, it's the standard: pull forward on the collet ring, insert a hex-shanked bit, and release. The spring snaps the bit into place. On some drills, quick-change systems use a magnetic bit holder in the chuck that accepts standard 1/4-inch hex bits without tightening the chuck jaws. Festool and Fein use proprietary quick-change systems on their oscillating tools for blade swaps. The advantage over a standard keyless chuck is speed. The tradeoff is that quick-change only accepts one shank type.

Why It Matters

On a job where you alternate between drilling and driving dozens of times per hour, the 5 seconds per bit change adds up. Quick-change cuts it to 1 second. For impact drivers, it's the only option anyway. For drills, a magnetic bit holder in the chuck splits the difference between versatility and speed.
