Dust Mask vs. Respirator

A dust mask is a disposable paper or fabric filter that covers the nose and mouth. It blocks large particles like sawdust and drywall dust. An N95 mask filters 95% of particles 0.3 microns and larger. A respirator is a reusable device with replaceable cartridges rated for specific hazards. P100 cartridges filter 99.97% of particles. OV (organic vapor) cartridges absorb chemical fumes from finishes, adhesives, and solvents. A half-face respirator covers the nose and mouth. A full-face respirator adds eye protection. For wood dust, an N95 is the minimum. For MDF, concrete, or any silica-producing material, a P100 respirator is the right choice.

Why It Matters

The dust you can see settling on the bench isn't the problem. The particles under 10 microns that stay airborne and enter your lungs are. Wood dust from some species is a known carcinogen. Silica dust from concrete causes silicosis. A paper dust mask from the gas station doesn't filter fine particles. Spend $30 on a half-face respirator with P100 filters and you're protected for years.
