Makita makes both corded and cordless belt sanders. The 9903 is a well-regarded corded 3x21 model that woodworkers have relied on for years. The XBU02Z is the cordless 18V LXT option with a shorter belt.
Makita 18V LXT Platform
The XBU02Z runs on 18V LXT batteries. The 9903 is corded (8.8A). For sustained belt sanding, the corded model is the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Makita 9903 better than the DeWalt DWP352VS?
They're close. The Makita runs quieter and has slightly better belt tracking. The DeWalt has a wider speed range (800 to 1,500 vs 690 to 1,440 SFPM). Both are solid corded belt sanders.
What belt grits should I keep on hand?
60 grit for aggressive material removal. 80 for general shaping. 120 for smoothing before switching to a random orbit sander. Don't bother with finer grits on a belt sander. That's what the orbital is for.
