Bosch makes multi-detection wall scanners that go beyond basic stud finding. The GMS120 detects wood studs, metal, and live AC wires in one unit. The D-tect series is the professional tier, detecting everything from rebar to plastic pipes. Overkill for hanging shelves, but invaluable for renovation work in older buildings.

Bosch N/A (AA batteries; D-tect uses 12V Li-ion) Platform

The GMS120 uses a single AA battery. The D-tect 200 C uses a proprietary rechargeable 12V Li-ion pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bosch GMS120 better than a Franklin Sensors ProSensor?

Different tools for different jobs. Franklin is the best at finding studs quickly and showing their full width. Bosch GMS120 adds metal and wire detection but only shows stud edges, not full width. For pure stud finding, Franklin wins. For renovation scanning (where pipes, wires, and studs all matter), Bosch wins.

Who needs the $350 D-tect scanner?

Renovation contractors, plumbers, and electricians who cut into walls regularly and can't afford to hit hidden pipes or wires. The plastic-pipe detection alone justifies the cost if you work in buildings with PEX plumbing behind drywall.
